Although MTH is disliked by Lionel collectors because its reproductions have lowered the market value of all but the most pristine vintage Lionel equipment, and disliked by some other hobbyists because of its aggressive marketing and legal tactics, MTH is widely credited with bringing innovations into a hobby that had changed very little since the 1950s, as well as lowering prices.
Marx
The original Marx trains were made by Girard, a Pennsylvania company. The "Joy Line" trains were about as toylike as one could get. This was common in the 1920s. Toy trains looked more like toys than models of the real thing. Marx took over Girard and made a few changes. Though they remained toylike, the Marx-designed trains looked more train-like than the Joy Line.
Marklin
Marklin is responsible for the creation of several popular model railroad gauges or scale, noteworthy exceptions being N scale and Wide gauge. In 1891, Marklin defined gauges 1-5 as standards for toy trains and presented them at the Leipzig Toy Fair. They soon became international standards. Marklin followed with O gauge (by some accounts as early as 1895 or as late as 1901), H0 scale in 1935, and the diminutive Z scale, 1:220, in 1972.
Lionel
Lionel is a manufacturer of model trains and accessories in O, S and G gauges. Lionel's long tradition of quality trains and accessories make them a respected favorite of hobbyists young and old.
